Exhibition ‘Awakening’

(First solo exhibition, 17 June 2022 in the shopping centre ‘Promenada’).

One beautiful, sunny morning before my 53rd birthday, I asked myself what is it that I still desire? What is that within me that is still shrivelled, undeveloped, unrealised… I knew that it was painting.

I am at that age where I distinguish between impossibility and excuse. Therefore I went to treat myself with canvas, paint brushes, paint… and a good portion of the night I devoted to painting. Between then and this evening it was exactly six months – and here we are at my first solo exhibition!

The exhibition is, however, an excuse to get together, after a long period, have a hug andchat. Enjoy!

 

Interview

The shopping centre ‘Promenada’ was a first choice to both myself and the organisers of my exhibition, without a second thought. As you can see, my roosters are rather colourful, they like to show off, they need an audience. And the shopping centre ‘Promenada’ is by far the most visited space in the city where people come to relax and enjoy. I can only add to that mood. I am pleased that the staff from the shopping centre ‘Promenada’ understood that and allowed me to exhibit in an environment which thrives with life and good mood.

There is a considerable difference between this audience and the one who comes to a
gallery or a museum to see an exhibition. It is their focus. The latter bought tickets, chose their company, dressed up and mentally prepared for a good night out. They have high expectations. The audience who will see my paintings however came to do some shopping. Their focus is on shop windows, and not on my paintings. Some are just in transit, some are in a rush. It will be a challenge to make them stop for a second in front of the paintings, not to mention to think about them! The least I expect is to be pleasantly surprised and aglow because somewhere where they are not expecting it … they come across an exhibition.

Something will probably pounce and dance at least for a moment, and then they willremember of that moment as an instigation for their own awakening, creativity… My paintings, of course, have the aesthetic and meaning, but my intention was to motivate
people to create, articulate their actions and become creative in their lives. One does not have to live according to the rules although that is probably the easiest. I am not a professional painter, that is my passion since my childhood. and youth which I have recently decided to revive and develop. I believe that everyone can amuse one’s senses, mind or spirit with my paintings.

The symbolism of rooster in our culture is rather deep and ancient, very layered and in direct contact with our archetype. Those meanings stayed until this day, although there are less and less of village yards. To cut the story short, a rooster is a house guardian, a host, defender and much much more…

By giving each rooster, also an ancient, personal name; I added a layer to that archetypal symbolism. If a curious viewer starts unravelling the meaning of each rooster, written on the frame, he will soon come to the main attributes that every rooster has at the same time as the viewer. It is an exciting and amusing chase!

Not really. There are many whose works I readily enjoy, but I am at that age when I don’t have time for idols. That is for the younger who still search for their path. I am not a researcher, I am a user of the fullness of that creative moment while I search for something from an ancient and real me. I have considerable life experience and I look for some inspiration not externally but internally. Every day I rejoice in my dives.

Control your focus! Guide your gaze often inwards, towards your wants and dreams! From
there grow into a different, freer self! And then tell the whole world about your
AWAKENING! With this exhibition I did the exact thing to myself! Welcome to my first solo
exhibition – the AWAKENING in the shopping centre ‘Promenada’ in Novi Sad, from 17 to
19th June 2022. WELCOME!

I trust that by now you understand that this exhibition is just an excuse to get together after a long time, hug and have a chat, to look back with gratitude at the moments in which we were to others, joy and support, help and comfort.
Thank you for being witness to this stage in my life, which is a result of the fulness with which we selflessly created whilst giving our best.

Your noble hearts, skills and talents were my inspiration and idol, and your support and selfless help made that tonight I step into something new, sudden and nice. You do the same, and I promise that I will provide a good wind to your sails!
For the feeling of fullness I have to thank Dragan Stojanovic, my spouse and my love, a witness and bearer to all of my uncertainties, dilemmas and bad moods. Grateful to my organisers from FUNNY EVENTS for today’s confident step ahead, bravery to exhibit. Thank you to Miodrag and Zeljko for this gorgeous and important experience, on behalf of all of us!
This exhibition I dedicate to my sister Ivana, full of lavish and unclaimed talents and to my mother Maria Pupovac, a safe harbour to whom I was able to come back to after every adventure or shipwreck.
